The Global Carbon Project has released its analysis of the global carbon cycle for 2009. They find that the growth rate of CO2 in the atmosphere was 1.6 ppm in 2009, lower than the 2000-2008 average of 1.9 ppm / year. Concentrations in the atmosphere were 387ppm at the close of 2009, 39% above the preindustrial. Because of the global economic downturn, CO2 emissions from fossil fuel burning in 2009 were 1.3% lower than in 2008. Fossil fuel emissions are increasing rapidly in developing countries, while they are rather steady in the developed world. In 2009, natural carbon sinks in the ocean and terrestrial biosphere removed 57% of human-emitted CO2 from the atmosphere.
